Northwest Chapter Woodfest - Sept. 17-18, 2005 by Allan Schwindt (#8209-L) |
The Northwest Chapter, on September 17 & 18, 2005, held its first Wood-fest at the home of Judi and Allan Schwindt at Silver Lake, WA. With space for RVs, motor homes, and campers, we had a very enjoyable weekend. Don Avery, our past
Chairman, brought his Wood-Mizer, and Bill Tarleton, (newly elected IWCS Trustee) from Lafayette, CA, brought his equipment designed for quarter-sawing lumber with a chain saw. Both sawyers put on quite a show and produced some high quality lumber from logs that were donated to the chapter. A lot of the lumber milled at the Woodfest was purchased by those present, and what remains will be available at our Spring meeting in Adna, WA. One log of Pacific madrone, (Arbutus men ziesii) had a rich pink color, and that lumber disappeared quickly. Most of the lumber that remains to be sold is big-leaf maple, (Acer macrophyllum) in 4-, 8-, and 12-quarter stock. There also is just a bit of Garry oak, (Quercus garryana). |

Several interesting demonstrations filled Saturday and Sunday:
- Many members displayed their creations for all to enjoy.
- Bill Tarleton demonstrated his laser guided tools for hollowing deep and multi-shaped vessels on the lathe on
both days. Some of his finished products and his equipment can be seen on his Web site at www.billswoodcreations.com.
- Judi Schwindt demonstrated her penmaking techniques on both days.
- Allan Schwindt showed how he makes his maple leaf lapel pins on Sunday.
- On Saturday, lunch was provided by Judi Schwindt and her helpers, and on Saturday evening, Goldie's Texas Barbeque, of Vancouver, brought in barbequed beef and chicken to make it an enjoyable meal for all.
- After a short business meeting we were treated to Alan Curtis' discussion of his wood collecting techniques. Then Terry Lamer told us about an enormous project in Cameroon, Africa. Terry will be logging about 400,000 acres of timber-about 625 square miles!-that will be used to fire a co-generation station providing power to a cobalt smelting facility. Terry is one of several new recruits who joined IWCS during Wood-fest.
- William and Alice Budd of Eatonville, WA. are also new members as of this meeting. They displayed some handsome, large turned bowls at their first meeting, and we welcome their future contributions to our group.
In all, it was a sucessful and enjoyable meeting. We look forward to many more Wood-fests in the years to come.
