2008 Southwest Regional Meeting at Mendocino

| We thank David and Matt Yager (new corporate members) for hosting the meeting on their Sequoia Vista Tree Farm, 39500 Comptche-Ukiah Rd., Mendocino, California. On Saturday, May 10th the meeting was started at 9:00 AM at the Sequoia Vista Tree Farm. Bill Tarleton, the Southwest Trustee, kicked off the meeting with introductions around. We had members coming from Utah and Oregon to Los Angeles. We had a brief show and tell for the crafts that folks brought for display. Alan Curtis gave a brief discussion on the history of IWCS. David and Matt Yager discussed how they manage and operate their sustained forestry tree farm. The rest of the day was spent with a lunch, and then wood cutting demonstrations of a Lucas Mill by Matt and David Yager milling a 5-6 foot diameter redwood log into useable lumber. Bill Tarleton quarter sawed and flat sawed a 24 inch black acacia log and a 16 inch Australian Pine which the members grabbed up as quickly as it was sawn. Toward the end of the day David Mouat led us on an interesting guided walking tour through the near-by Pygmy Forest telling of the interesting geology of the area and how the plants/trees have adapted. Sunday, May 11th the meeting was held at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens 18220 North Highway One, Ft. Bragg CA 95437, Phone 707-964-4352. They provided a guided tour. You can see more about the gardens at www.gardenbythesea.org. The tour was followed by a California State Forester presentation on the local Jackson State Forest Harvest Plan. Following the meeting many members visited the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino to view the work of many woodworking artists.
