IWCS 2014 Northwest Meet, Silver Lake, Washington,
July 12, 2014
 We met at the home of Allan and Judi Schwindt in Silver Lake, Washington. Thirty four members and guests attended. After admiring the beautiful view from their house we began the day with several presentations by members: Ken Bassett talked and showed some old woodworking tools from his collection. Fred Holder told us about turning the Chinese ball – it looks impossible to make as it is 3 turned balls, one inside the other inside the other – really unique. Allan Schwindt explained how he makes his beautiful inlaid maps of USA, Africa, and the World. Dave Mouat presented us with a wood ID quiz in which we had to use our noses – he had 10 small paper bags filled with shavings from odoriferous woods, and we could only smell the odors but not peek at the shavings. After everyone had “put their nose to the test” Dave revealed the identities of the woods. The “winning wood odor detective” got 4 out of 10 correct, most of the rest of us “flunked” the quiz. The woods had a cedar theme and included western red cedar, incense cedar, Port Orford cedar, juniper, and others.
After lunch we held a short business meeting and then began the wood auction. Auctioneer Ken Bassett did an excellent job and raised $625 from the sales of donated woods. Everyone went home with at least one “treasure.” We all enjoyed the hospitality provided by Allan and Judi at their lovely home.
