International Wood Collectors Society

A Dedicated Group of Wood Collectors and Crafters

Dear Garry and all,

Many thanks Garry for coming all the way out to New Haven, MO last Saturday and presenting your Wood Identification 101. Everyone came away from the meeting with a better understanding and knowledge of the basic process of how to ID wood and the joy of looking at the end grain through the optical loupe. We're all looking forward to attending a  Garry Roux Wood Identification 2.0 sometime   in 2020! We all enjoyed seeing you blow air bubbles through a 1 1/2” x 3” sample of Red Oak to illustrate the nature of the open pore structure of the wood. In viewing thin cut red oak, light was visible when held the sample up to a light source.

Thanks to everyone for coming out in spite of the long drive and all the rain, thanks for the delicious deserts and side dishes shared, and all of the wood donated for the auction!!!

We ran out of time to turn buttons, but we all got a chance to see the button and maple leaf pins made by Allan Schwindt, buttons by Kendra Gillman, and the colorful bottle stopper sample by Allan as well. Garry you mentioned we’ll do the button turning at a future meeting, that sounds perfect!!

It was a great meeting, we missed the members that couldn’t make it.

Warm regards,

Violet Oman

Eric and I hosted this event. Our diamond in the rough (very rough) log cabin South of New Haven, almost to Stony Hill down Highway E ( MO 312), take a right on Horstman Road for 1.1 miles. You can see the cabin on the left as you come up the hill. There's plenty of parking.
